According to MTS, in December 2020-January 2021 in Moscow, the mobile Internet traffic of the company’s subscribers in the Telegram and WhatsApp messengers equaled. The growth of traffic on WhatsApp last year was about 40%. Telegram traffic has grown more than 60 times during this time. RB.RU was informed about this in the press service of MTS.
The active growth of traffic in Telegram fell on the middle of summer 2020. Then Roskomnadzor canceled the restrictions on the messenger in Russia. In July 2020, after the restrictions were lifted, mobile Internet traffic on Telegram grew 11 times compared to a month earlier.
In addition, the analysis showed that Telegram is more actively used during working hours for reading channels and business communication. Peak values for WhatsApp occur in the morning and evening hours, as well as on weekends. WhatsApp is more often used to communicate with family and friends, in parenting, sports and friendly groups.
“Traffic in WhatsApp on December 31 and January 1 annually renews maximums, growing several times in comparison with any working day, while activity in Telegram not only does not grow, but even demonstrates a slight decrease,” MTS said.
The company’s analysts explained that Telegram attracts audiences with content. It replaces media sites, news portals, some financial services, discount program aggregators, product technical support and much more.
At the same time, MTS expects that Pavel Durov’s messenger will continue to gradually attract users who will start using it to communicate with each other. Telegram traffic volumes in Russia in 2021 will continue to grow at a faster pace than WhatsApp, the company said.
According to MTS, at the moment Moscow is the only city in Russia where the traffic volumes of two messengers are at the same level. In other cities, WhatsApp is still the leader in terms of both the number of users and the volume of traffic.
For the analysis, we used anonymized data on the traffic of Telegram and WhatsApp applications in the MTS mobile network for the period from December 20, 2019 to January 20, 2021.
At the beginning of this year, it became known that the monthly number of active Telegram users exceeded 500 million people.
